CASE STUDY: A WOMAN SEEKING TREATMENT FOR HIP AND LEG PAIN
Stéphan Guindon has been practicing osteopathy for 30 years, and his mission is to alleviate your pain. On many occasion, people consult osteopathic manual therapist for back pain. During an osteopathic assessment, it often becomes clear that these back pains are not solely related to bone, muscle, or tendon structures but can also be influenced by the soft tissues that connect the organs and viscera to the spine. These tissues affect blood circulation (arterial and venous) as well as the nervous system, whether voluntary (such as arm movement) or involuntary (such as digestion).
Let’s take the example of a woman experiencing persistent pain in her left hip and leg, accompanied by occasional lower abdominal discomfort during ovulation. She previously had an ectopic pregnancy on the left side, which required surgery. Since giving birth, she has suffered from varicose veins affecting blood circulation, as well as constipation, linked to involuntary nervous system dysfunction.

During the osteopathic examination of this patient, several observations were made:
- The piriformis and psoas muscles were extremely tight.
- There were greater tensions on the left side than on the right, particularly in the ligament between the sacrum and the pelvic bone.
- The fascia supporting the pelvis was tense on the left side.
- The sacrum was misaligned relative to the pelvic bones and was positioned forward.
- The left pelvic bone showed restricted mobility.
- The small intestine also exhibited limited mobility.
- The sigmoid colon (part of the large intestine) was adhering to the left pelvic bone.
The osteopathic manual therapist will address the most significant dysfunctions identified during the assessment. Additionally, mobility exercises and stretches will be prescribed to improve the patient’s condition.
For this particular case, approximately 3 to 5 visits will be needed to effectively relieve her discomfort.
